I am really hurt and confused. I can't believe it. The flannel boards in Sunday School might have been wrong. What do I mean? For example look at Genesis 3. Every time the story of the fall of Adam and Eve was shown on felt board or in a children's Bible it places the serpent in the tree of knowledge with Eve standing next to the tree. and Adam was no where to be found. The flannel board always showed an apple and we don't know what kind of fruit it was. I am over the apple thing though. Back to the primary characters and where they were.
The reason this bothers me is the way I understand it, Eve was not out to eat from the tree. The serpent comes along and distorts the truth and confuses her with a little "Did God really say 'do not eat from any tree in the garden'?" Now we know the serpent knew the truth. He was playing word games with Eve. He just kept planting seeds of doubt until "she was convinced". There is no indication that the partaking of the fruit was immediate. There is no indication that Adam was apart of the conversation.
So lets pretend for a moment. Lets make our own story. Eve goes for a walk to find some food for breakfast. Serpent enters and has this conversation with Eve about how great life would be if she eats the fruit.
Later that night
Adam-"Hey Babe, why don't we eat at the peach tree tonight."
Eve- "we ate there last night. Lets eat somewhere else."
Adam-"where do you want to eat at?"
Eve-"I don't know you pick."
Adam-"How about the mulberry bush"
Eve-"No I am tired of mulberries.
So there they go, round and round the mulberry bush for awhile but still can't decide on a place to eat.
Eve-"Hey honey, I was talking with a friend today and he was telling me about this tree he likes. He said it is to die for."
Adam-"Really, what tree"
Eve-"The one in the center of the garden."
Adam-"I am starving lets go"
I hope you never read Genesis 3 the same again. Go read it with a fresh look and see how the story plays out for you.
Why am I bothered by all of this? The story I grew up with is not the reality of sin that I see in me and around me. The journey down the path of sin is rarely a simple decision to destroy your life. It is a bunch of little decisions, mixed with seeds of doubt, and a side of passivity.
What other Bible stories have you learned wrong only to learn later they might have happen differently?
