Rest on the Sabbath, What Does it Mean?

There is much discussion and debate on the subject of the Sabbath, but here are my thoughts and opinions.  The Sabbath does not equal Sunday (or Saturday for that matter).  It does not equal going to a service.  It was designed so man will rest.  We need rest. "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath" (Mark 2:27).  It was made to make sure we rest.  Verses 28-29 goes on to say that "the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath".  In Matthew Jesus reveals Himself as fulfilling the Sabbath.  "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law (The Sabbath) or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them" (5:17).  He later says "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest (Sabbath).  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am humble in heart, and you will find rest (Sabbath) for your souls" (11:28-29, emphasis mine).

We need to find our rest in Jesus and in Him alone.  Some people try to rest in their own accomplishments, account balances, or abilities.  As we have all experienced, these come and go.  We lose that job, an investment goes south, or we can't physically or mentally do the things we used to do.  Others try to rest in their observance of religious traditions and observances. Most people I have talked to and from my own experiences do not find rest here.  There is this constant question of have I done enough.  As if doing more would bring about rest.

However, when we rest in Jesus, we find true rest that circumstances cannot take away.  The beauty of this in that we can find rest everyday.  It is not tied to a day of the week, circumstances, or our own performance.  It is always there. "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble (Psalms 46:1).
