Do You Hear Him Now?

I have heard it said many times, and even said it myself, "When I get to heaven I am going to ask God . . ."  That leads to the question of "why wait?"  Paul instructs in Ephesians 6 to "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests."  Part of the "all kinds of prayers" is listening.  Prayer is a two way conversation.  God desires to talk to us.  He does not want us to wait to talk to him.  God has been speaking from the beginning.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.  And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day (Genesis 1:1-5 NIV).

We see the Spirit of God hovering and waiting to speak.  When the voice of God speaks it brings light.  This was not only true then, it is true now.  God is waiting, wanting to speak.  When we do take time to listen, his voice will bring light.  It is not God's desire that we wonder around in the dark.  He wants to speak and bring light into our lives.  The reason we often feel lost is that we are listening to everything but God, or we don't know how to recognize His voice.

We communicate with each other in different ways.  We use our voice.  We also use non-verbal communication like body language.  God is the same way.  He also speaks in different ways.

"God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways;
 he does great things beyond our understanding" (Job 37:5 NIV).

God speaks in marvelous ways.  He does not just speak in one way.  He gave us the Bible.  He gave us the Holy Spirit.  He gave us each other.  Sometimes he speaks through his creation.  It is beautiful all of the ways that God speaks to us.  We just have to make sure we take time to listen now and not wait for "someday".
