If you know me I have a tendency to look at things a little differently than other people. This is definitely one of those moments. I work in education. We are constantly hearing about and being encouraged to use positive reinforcement (PBIS). This is definitely a pendulum that can be swung to far. I get that. This time of year these videos start popping up of police officers doing traffic stops and giving out Christmas gifts. I love it. I drive a stretch of road daily that always has people being pulled over for speeding.
Now what do all of these things have to do with each other inside my brain? I started thinking would it make a difference if traffic police started using PBIS. If police officers started pulling people over for doing the speed limit could we reduce speeding? If you were pulled over and given $100 gas card or other incentive would you start doing the speed limit? If they turned these over to insurance companies and insurance companies would lower your premiums for so many tickets in a 5 year period would that motivate you to follow the rules? I see benefits for police officers too. There would be less paper work and less court appearances. This would increase positive interactions between police and the public.
Add a comment and let me know if you think it would work. What other effects would happen as a result?
