My word for 2018 is Courage. I am hoping by being vulnerable and sharing some of what I am working through might encourage you.
Before I can apply I must first understand. What is courage? Is it a feeling, a virtue, or a decision? Can I just to decide to be more courageous.
Google defines courage as "the ability to do something that frightens one" (1). Mirriam-Webster adds
"courage implies firmness of mind and will in the face of danger or extreme difficulty" (2).
I am already not liking courage. Here is some vulnerability. Courage requires some things I do not want. It requires fear, danger, extreme difficulty.
The word courage comes from the Latin root cor (heart). It has the ending age which means "the measure of". you put that together and you get courage is the measure of the heart.
Do I have enough heart to stand up to fear, danger, and extreme difficulty?
I want to close with this message from the Apostle Paul:
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (3)
