Pillars not Studs
The above is a picture of the Parthenon in Athens. It was built around 430 BCE. Below is an animation of what some believe it looked like then. It does not look like much now, but it is still there.
Not to offend any of my construction friends, but how many buildings that were built in the year 2018 will be around in any form in 2000 years? There is a house down the street from me that is about 100 years old. It was dragged by oxen to its current location. Even so, that thing will be dust before the year 4000. My house was built in the '90s. Try to drag it anywhere and it will crumble.
What is the difference? I would say the major difference is the column pillars. They are not there just for show. They are the support system of the entire structure. We use this thing now called a stud. They are so small we hide them behind the paper walls we now use.
What's my point? The church! That is my point. We have fallen into the trap of trying to be studs; little weak things that hide in neat rows behind the walls. God did not call us to be studs. He called us to be pillars.
Matthew 5:14-16 says, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
The columns on the Parthenon look good but that is not their purpose. Their purpose is to hold up the building. We need to come out from behind our walls, not so we can look good, but so we can glorify our Father in heaven. Stop being a stud. Studs support things that will not last longer than them. Start being a pillar that can support something that will outlast you. The city of God is waiting. Stop hiding.
