Take Control of Your Program

My brother has always been really good with computers.  When we were kids I remember he would get these magazines that had basic computer programs in them.  He would read them to me and I would type them into the computer.  I remember one time we were creating a card game and I turned around and there was no magazine.  He was making the stuff up in his head.  I remember the majority of things I typed being if statements.  "If X < Y  Then Insert 2"  Maybe you have used the If Functions on Microsoft Excel and are familiar with those types of statements.

These types of statements are great when creating a computer program.  The problem is when you try to create a life with them.  Let me explain.  Have you ever said something like this; "If I get this much money in the bank then I will have enough", "If I get this job then I will be happy",  "If my spouse would just do this or be like this then our marriage would work"  When you program your life to rely on an external circumstance to define success or happiness you are relinquishing control of your life.

There is another statement used in computer programming.  It is called a control statement.  This is a statement that determines whether the other statements will be executed or not.  I have no idea what that means when it comes to computer programming.  Remember, I am the typing brother.  I do know what this looks like in life.  A control statement in life might be; "No matter how much money I have I will be a good manager of those resources", "I will work hard at my job regardless if I am recognized for it", "I will be loving and respectful to my spouse regardless if it is reciprocated".  These are all statements that leave the control in your possession.  You are not waiting on some external circumstance to choose your action and your attitude.

Which type of statement do you want to program your life with?  I know I would rather use control statements.

Let me end with this if statement.  If you like what you are reading then subscribe, like, and share this post.
