You Complete Me

The famous movie line from Jerry Maquire, "You complete me", sounds so romantic but is so wrong.  I am raising three daughters and a son, and I do not want any of them to think they need a man or a woman to complete them.  That is not something God ever intended.  Instead, I want my son to embrace his masculinity and my daughters to embrace their femininity.  I want them all to walk in the strength that each of those brings.

God did not create "half-humans" that spend their lives walking around earth looking for their other half.  That sounds like a late night, made for television, horror movie.  We are complete in our own.  In Genesis 1:27 it says "So God created mankind in his own imagein the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."

So where does this idea of completion come from?  In the above verse the key words are "in the image of God".  For all of you that grew up with the idea in your head that God was male, this might be hard for you to swallow.  God is neither male or female.  God is not created in our image.  We are created in his image.  If he created both male and female in his image than we know that he contains all of those attributes.  We do not complete each other.  Together, we complete the image of God.  It is our job, working together, to reflect that image to the world.
