I say I believe a lot of things but how many of them am I fully committed to? By definition, to be committed to something requires action. If you want to know what you truly believe look at the completed items on your to-do list. Look at your bank account and see where you put your money. "Where your treasure is, there your heart is also." What you treasure and where you invest that treasure is the mirror of belief. Here are three things we can do in response to this truth:
1. Evaluate: Take some time to honestly look at how you spend your time and money. Does it really line up with what you say you believe? Part of that evaluation process should be asking those close to you what they think you believe. I work with children and youth. Jesus showed over and over again that he valued children so I believe if I want to be like Jesus I need to do the same.
2. Make Adjustments: Rather you are happy with the results of your evaluation or not, make adjustments. Maybe you will realize you need to make some big changes. Maybe it will only require some small tweaks. To line up my life with my beliefs I had to make a career change. For a friend of mine, he believed that his children needed to be more of a treasure so he made changes to his work schedule so he could be home when his son gets home. Maybe you will need to invest more of your money into organizations that are furthering the cause of your beliefs.
3. Evaluate Again: The world is constantly changing and so are you. Make sure those changes are moving you in the direction you intended. I took a job one time that I thought would allow me to operate more in the area of my passion and skills. A year later, I evaluated and realized this was not the case. I was in an area completely outside of my strengths and skills. I had to make more adjustments. This is a process that is worth repeating over and over again.
What do you believe? Do your schedule and bank account line up with your beliefs? What adjustments do you need to make?
